Bronchial Asthma is known as Tomaka Shvasa in Ayurveda. It is an allergic condition resulting from the reaction of the body to one or more allergens and is one of the most fatal respiratory diseases. Bronchial asthma is increasing day by day with the increase in level of pollution and the stressful lifestyle followed by people.
The attack of asthma can be sudden if the person is hypersensitive to certain substances like pollen or dust, substances from animals like dogs and cats, certain foods to which the person is allergic and from certain bacteria. Bronchial asthma can also be caused by the disorders of the stomach and the gastro-intestinal tract. Early symptoms like indigestion, diarrhea or constipation can be noticed in the early stages of these diseases affecting the digestive tract.

The Ayurvedic Doshas and Asthma
Ayurveda considers Kapha as the primary dosha disturbance that causes asthma. Kapha induced asthma normally shows symptom like wheezing with cough accompanied by white or transparent phlegm. The lungs will be filled with water that creates a rattling or crackling sound. Mostly attacks occur in the mornings and evenings.
Pitta induced dosha is the cause of Cardiac asthma. This is identified by coughing and wheezing with yellow phlegm. Sweating, fever, irritability and the need for cool air is common. These attacks happen during noon or midnight.
Vata dosha related asthma symptoms are dry cough, dry mouth, dry skin, thirst, anxiety, constipation and craving for a warm drink. These attacks usually occur at early morning and dusk.
