The act of eating is life-giving.

The process of eating, according to Ayurveda, is something pious and important for the development of consciousness as well as our physical health. Healthy mind resides in a healthy body. And, therefore, Vedas say that “We shall regard our body as the temple of our soul and maintain its sanctity and health by observing self-restraint and punctuality in our routine”.

The purpose of food is to sustain healthy and harmonious functioning of the body system, the physical medium of our life, to enable us to perform our duties. Food is not meant to satiate the greed of our tongue or stomach. Ayurvedic texts never abandon the basic importance of food and drink from the medical view-point. The vaidyas emphasize that food has life or “prana”. The Charak Samhita says:

Prāṇaḥ prāṇabhūtam annaṃ lokaḥ abhidhāvati/
varṇaḥ prasādaḥ sausvaryaṃ jīvitaṃ pratibhā sukham//
tuṣṭiḥ puṣṭiḥ balaṃ medhā sarvam anne praṣṭhitam/

Thus, not to speak of the physical characteristics like complexion, strength, etc., even those faculties or qualities that are ordinarily viewed as psychical – talent pratibhā), excellence of intelligence (medhā) etc. – are all derived from food. More remarkable than all this, is what is about “life” or prāṇa. The vaidyas say, “life is nothing but food transformed into life” – prāṇaḥ prāṇabhūtam annaṃ.

This life or “prana” in the food may get altered by the chemicals forced into the plants by the use fertilisers or pesticides. Thus, to keep the “prana” intact and unaltered and get the real impact of food on health, Ayurveda suggests to use only organically grown/produced food. The fact is that various natural substances consumed by us as food and drink determine the conditions called health and disease. The Charak Samhita puts a special emphasis on this: “the only factor that promotes the growth of man (i.e. ensures his health) is the consumption of wholesome food. The consumption of unwholesome food again is the cause of diseases”:

hita-ahara upayogaḥ ekaḥ eva purusha-vriddhikarah bhavati
ahita-ahara-upayogah punaḥ vyadhi-nimittam iti.
